And So It Was

I took a walk to the park
I got no job
A man with a food truck
Sold me corn on the cob
I avoided the mob

Didn’t know what to look for
I picked up some change
Saw a bench with a hobo
He was acting strange
He asked me my name

I said my name’s Leonidas
I am Sparta’s King
He joked about being Persian
Then he started to sing
How could he know such a thing?

I moved on from our banter
I had nothing to do
Someone yelled ‘how’s retirement?’
I said, What’s it to you?
It was my neighbor Lou

I slept sideways for hours
In the brightness of day
I discovered the park’s sprinklers
They started to spray
I walked away

I headed for home
Just more of the same
Had no plans for the evening
Much to my shame
With only myself to blame

And So it Was
And So it is
And So it will be
